Our commitment
Expats Ecuador aims to be usable by everyone, including people using screen readers, keyboard navigation, voice-control software, magnification, or with limited mobility. Our target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA compliance.
What we've done
- Built on semantic HTML (proper headings, landmarks, labels)
- Keyboard navigation works throughout: Tab moves forward, Shift+Tab back, Enter activates, Escape closes overlays
- Visible focus indicators on all interactive elements
- Color contrast meets WCAG AA ratios on body text and CTAs
- All informative images have alt text; decorative images are marked as such
- Forms have visible labels and error messages (not just colour cues)
- Articles are mobile-responsive with no horizontal scroll required
- No auto-playing audio or video
Known limitations
We're honest about what's not yet ideal:
- Our property maps (Leaflet) have limited keyboard navigation for pin browsing. A cards-only fallback is available on every listing page.
- Some imported articles (from our archive going back to 2009) have imperfect or missing alt text on inline images. We're reviewing these as we refresh each article.
- Our photo gallery lightbox is functional with keyboard (Arrow keys + Escape) but hasn't been tested with every assistive technology.
- Bilingual content is English-only today. A Spanish version of the site is on the roadmap.
